David O. Cumbo, Sr.,85, died at CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern, NC on December 14th.

Mr. Cumbo was born on August 8, 1932 in Jones County, NC to his parents, George H and  Emma Lee Mallard Cumbo. He owned Mills Bros. Grocery Store and Service Station in Belgrade, NC in the late 1970’s.  In the early 1980’s he opened Belgrade Automotive and Machine Shop until his retirement in 1995. After retiring he spent his time playing golf at the Jacksonville Country Club and doing woodworking projects in his shop.

Mr. Cumbo loved people and enjoyed fellowship with his family and friends. He represented the true meaning of love.  He was an active member of Belgrade United Methodist Church and served on many committees there including the Men’s Club.  He was an active member of Jacksonville Country Club.  He will always be remembered for his homemade country ham biscuits and his famous Adirondack chairs that so many people have come to enjoy.

Mr. Cumbo is survived by his wife, Carol, son and daughter in law, Dave and Laura Cumbo, daughter and son in law, Pam and Jay Lech all of Jacksonville ,  Lewie and Virginia Melvin of Maysville, Fallon and Betty Melvin of Willow Springs, NC; his brother Jason Cumbo of Cape Carteret, and sister and brother in law, Betty and Eddie Taylor of Oregon, OH, and one grandchild Karley Lech, as well as many nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by his lifelong friend W.D. “Billy” Mills and his four legged best bud Abby. He was preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen Zinno, and sister in law, Martha Cumbo.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM  Wednesday, December, 20th at Sayland Funeral Home 703 Mattocks Ave. in Maysville and at other times at the home in Jacksonville.  A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 21 at 3:00 p.m. at the Belgrade United Methodist Church in Belgrade.
