Kathleen “Kay” Armstrong Jenkins LaRoque
MAYSVILLE, NC – Kathleen Armstrong Jenkins LaRoque, 98 of 301 10th Street, Maysville, NC passed away March 22, 2020 at home.
Kay was born in Rocky Mount, NC on December 5, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Robert Solomon Armstrong and Henrietta Batchelor Armstrong. Kay was an All American Gold Medal Basketball Player, Red Oak High School, Red Oak in 1940. She was crowned Miss Nash County in 1940. She won first ladies golf tournament, Morehead City Country Club in 1954. She was named Paul Harris Fellow. She graduated from Hardbarger Business College, Raleigh, NC in 1942. She was secretary, UNC Chapel Hill Building Department, secretary at Flight School, UNC Chapel Hill during World War II, Co-Owner of Jenkins Furniture Company in Morehead City, Maysville, and Trenton and was Bookkeeper at Pelletier Motor Company, Maysville, NC. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Maysville, NC.
Kay was preceded in death by her first husband Virgil Burns Jenkins (married January 13, 1945 at Duke University Chapel, Durham, NC) and second husband Milan “Rat” Oldfield LaRoque (married January 22, 1972, Maysville, NC). She was preceded in death by her brothers: Robert “Jack” Armstrong, Joseph “Joe” Armstrong, William Armstrong, Albert “Mark” Armstrong, Lawrence “Clint” Armstromg and sisters: Mary Ruth Douglass Martin, Josephine Allen, and Frances Johnson Coffey.
A graveside services will be held at noon Thursday March 26 in the Maysville Cemetery.
Kay is survived by her daughters Sandra Kay Jenkins of the home and Patricia “Patsy” Jenkins Groover and son-in-law Ronald T. Groover of Chocowinity, NC; grandchildren, John Parker, III and wife Mary Beth of Fayetteville, NC, Allen Cribb and wife Brenda of Wilmington, NC, Robert Dulaney and wife Janet of Decatur, GA, Elizabeth Hunt and husband Matthew of Oceanside, CA, Shane Groover of Chocowinity, NC,and Christy Groover Braddy of Iron Station, NC; great grand children, Jack Parker and Mary Katherine Parker of Fayetteville, NC, Alyssa Cribb, WessCribb,and Hunter Cribb of Wilmington, NC, Matthew Dulaney and Andrew Dulaney of Decatur, GA, Sierra Segel and Nathan Segel of Oceanside, CA, Evan Cardoso of Maiden, NC, Seth Hentschel of Newton, NC, Noah Groover of Taylorsville, NC, and Willow Cottrell of Marlton, NJ.
